The annual Charter Day Luncheon was held at the Club on Saturday 17th June 2017, on a bright and sunny day, to celebrate and commemorate the granting of the Royal Charter to the grammar school and subsequently the college.
It is usual for the lunch to be held on the nearest Saturday to the date of the granting of the charter but this year the day and date were coincidental.
Connor Hill, Remley Mann, President Mike Aston
Our guests of honour on this occasion were Mrs Remley Mann (Principal of King Edward’s College) and her husband Eamon, Connor Hill (2017-2018 Chair of the Students Union at the College) and our own Alan Cutler, Chairman of Trustees at the College. Apologies had been received from Chris Painter, the Chair of Governors.
To open proceedings, the President, Mike Aston, gave a short address of welcome to the 20 members, guests and friends attending the occasion followed by an erudite and charming grace.
As always, a fine spread suitable for a summer’s day had been prepared by Tim, commencing with a starter of smoked salmon and prawns and followed by a platter of cold meats with an unending plethora of salads and accompaniments, all well served at table by Tracy and Mandy.
A suitably chosen white wine was provided with the meal. A sweet of raspberry meringue, followed by cheese and biscuits and coffee completed our full enjoyment of a special luncheon.
Paul Thatcher proposed the loyal toast followed by the toast to the ‘Boy King’, Edward VI – “ In Piam Memoriam Edwardi Sexti ”, proposed and led by Alan Cutler.
