Chinese New Year Banquet 2017

Around 40 members and guests joined us for our celebrations of the Chinese New Year on Saturday 28th January 2017.

The event was held in our main bar area which facilitated both discussion with those present and immediate access to the means of quenching thirst as required
The evening commenced with President Mike Aston calling the celebrations to order and welcoming those present to what he hoped would be a most enjoyable evening.
However, this year, the welcome had a new twist. the President attempted the welcome in Chinese to the delight and amusement of the attendees.
Siward James-Moore, resplendent in appropriate attire, was on hand to explain and interpret what was really going on.
He explained that he (Siward) was a poor substitute for two genuine lady Chinese international students from KEVI College.
The President had apparently enlisted their aid in helping him to prepare his words in Chinese but sadly they could not be present. He went on to explain the significance of 2017 being the year of not just any old year rooster but the year of the FIRE Rooster. People born in this year are alleged to be "Trustworthy, with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility at work".
The task of saying "Grace" was passed to Immediate Past President John Yeates.
John duly obliged with a humourous form of grace in his own inimitable and eloquent fashion
Then it was time to get on with the serious business of consuming the feast that our Steward Tim had painstakingly prepared (we could not insult him by saying no...).
Most are surprised when they are made aware that Tim had prepared all the food himself (and not shipped it in from a local takeaway!). In reality, as part of his career some years ago, a restaurant where Tim was working was taken over by Chinese. They invited Tim to stay on and they subsequently taught him how to cook proper Chinese food. Tim says he is full of admiration for the skills of true Chinese chefs.

Tracey and her staff ably kept the courses flowing in an ever-continuous stream of food.
Clearly Tim had excelled himself this year both with the choice of food and the quality of the preparation and presentation.
It was magnificent and there was something (most things) which everyone would like as evidenced by the speed in which the banquet was consumed and the satisfied looks on everyone's faces.
At the end of the evening, the President thanked all of those who had made it happen (with special thanks to Tim of course) and wished everyone a safe journey home after a most enjoyable evening.
