Some 40 members, guests and family joined Clive Bowen-Davies and Jim Higgs to celebrate their recent 90th birthdays on Saturday lunchtime July 22nd 2017.
It was a privilege to be able to share this joyous occasion which marked not only their attainment of nine decades but also many years as senior members of the Club.
The session began with convivial refreshments in the Memorial Room, with President Mike Aston and Vice President Roger Hadley on hand to welcome the guests of honour (Clive and Jim), their families and all members and other guests who came to join the celebration.
There was an apparent air of extra goodwill as befitted the impending occasion.
Jem Norris performed the role as master of ceremonies with his usual efficiency, calling everyone to order in the main bar area (where the tables were laid out) and then invited Vice President Roger Hadley to say Grace.
The menu comprised Goujons of Sole for starters, Rack of Lamb as Main Course and Fruit Salad for dessert. As usual, the food was superbly prepared by Tim and delivered effectively by Tracey and her staff.
The President spoke at length about each of Clive and Jim, their lives and involvement with the Club.
Clive responded, emotionally referencing his service to the Club both as one time Honorary Secretary (as persuaded by Jim Higgs) and his current role as Manager of the 50-Club Lottery. He has excelled in both these roles, making a real difference to the Club.
Jim followed suit and provided a very humorous insight into a number of issues in his own inimitable style.
The President, on behalf of the Club, then made presentations to Clive and Jim. This was in the form of beautiful cut glass tankards, suitable inscribed with the Club logo, which were well received by the "birthday boys".
We hope they gain pleasure from theses items for many years to come in remembrance of this day.
Not to be outdone, Clive offered a present to the Club on behalf of both Jim and himself.
This was a very prestigious lectern / reading stand, inscribed from both of them and which the President was delighted to receive.
It will be of considerable use in future group sessions such as Committee meetings, Annual General meetings and formal occasions.
The whole event was pure delight, much enjoyed by all and a fitting tribute to two of the most faithful of our members. We now look forward to celebrate their 100th birthdays in 10 years time .......
