Fifteen Past Presidents of the Club attended the annual dinner held in the Memorial Room on Monday evening 4th November 2019. The Immediate Past President, Roger Hadley, chaired proceedings and gave a few words of welcome to all, including the guest of honour, Brian Arch, the current Club president. David Trewin said Grace prior to the meal.
As expected, a superb meal was provided by Tim, served with her usual efficiency by Tracey.
The menu consisted of a prawn cocktail starter, a main course of glazed gammon with cranberry and red wine sauce with creamed potatoes, peas carrots and broad beans, followed by a sweet of lemon tart, cheese, coffee and mints.
As always, an excellent choice of white and red wines and Port had been selected by Alan Cutler.
The loyal toast was given by Kenneth Wright, immediately followed by the toast to the founder of our alma mater – the boy king, Edward VI, given by Alan Cutler. Mike Aston proposed the toast to absent friends.
As is tradition, the President ‘sang for his supper’ and gave a short speech providing an account of the activities of his year in office and the current status of the club.
Although expressing his diffidence in the art of public address, he was confident in both delivery and content. He said that it had been a privilege to serve the Club as President and that he had greatly enjoyed his year.
The year was not without noteworthy progress and changes particularly the proposal passed at the recent EGM entitling Associates to two seats on the General Committee. Again, this year had involved unexpected expense, with the breakdown of the main boiler and necessary replacement and the required replacement of the entrance barrier system.
However, the President was pleased to report that the Club was financially sound and in good repair. He concluded with the final toast of the evening to ‘The Club’.
Once again, a splendid and convivial evening was enjoyed by all.
