St. George's Day Dinner was attended by some 26 members and guests, who enjoyed the ambience of the memorial room, in anticipation of an enjoyable night of good food, good company and good entertainment in the form of prose expertly compiled as always by Alan Cutler.

It's the annual excuse to celebrate all things English - despite the fact that our patron saint had nothing to do with England and has been adopted by a host of other countries as well!

Paul Thatcher delivered the Grace and it was then time for the dinner to be served, expertly prepared by Tim and efficiently served by Tracey and her staff.

A delicious platter of asparagus and scallops was savoured as the starter, followed by the main course of traditional roast beef with all the trimmings. Rhubarb crumble and then an appropriate selection of English cheeses completed the feast - whose constituents were in copious supply and no-one went away hungry!

As is to be expected, the decanter of Vintage Port was passed round continuously - and its contents were continuously replenished in a most agreeable fashion.

Toasts were proposed to the Queen (by Vice President Rob Hill in the President's absence) and to the boy King (by Alan Cutler) without whom none of us would have been there.

A comprehensive range of readings and poetry had again been prepared by Alan Cutler, willingly and enthusiastically delivered by many of the attendees.

The event would not be complete without Martin Timmins leading the charge with his lively delivery of the final passage culminating in the impassioned call to arms "For England and St. George".

Jem Norris concluded the proceedings by thanking everyone for coming - with special thanks to all who had assisted the evening through catering, participation and most especially he proposed a toast to Alan Cutler for the massive time he always takes in organising the event and in preparing all the spoken passages.
