19 of the 24 existing Past Presidents attended the annual Past Presidents’ Dinner, held in the Memorial Room at the Club on the evening of 6th November 2017. The Immediate Past President , John Yeates, acted as host and chairman for the evening and the President, Mike Aston, was guest of honour.
John Yeates opened proceedings with a few words of welcome.
He then called on Peter Cartwright to say grace prior to the meal being served.
As always, a splendid meal was provided by Tim, commencing with prawn cocktail, followed by steak & ale pie with Lyonnaise potatoes, peas and cabbage and rounded off with a cheeseboard accompanied by a fruit platter and coffee, all agreeably served by Tracy and her team. As usual, excellent wines and port had been chosen by Alan Cutler to go with the meal.
Siward James-Moore proposed the loyal toast followed by Alan Cutler, who proposed the toast to the ‘Boy King’.
The toast to absent friends was proposed by John Yeates, who gave a brief up-date on the health and well-being of those unable to attend.
In accordance with tradition, the President was required to ‘sing for his supper’. Mike gave an eloquent and nicely crafted speech giving details of the activities and standing of the Club over the past year and proposed future developments. He was well received with appreciative applause.
The contents of his talk gave food for thought and prompted a lively discussion and exchange of views to ensue and added an additional frisson to an evening greatly enjoyed by all.
