Some 70 members and guests enjoyed a very well attended traditional Boar's Head Supper at the Club on Monday 23rd December 2024.

In advance of the main event, newly elected President Arnold Homer "became acquainted" with the boar's head in the Memorial Room.

Rosanne Norris had meticulously prepared and decorated the boar's head as usual.

Our steward, Tim, had prepared a multitude of rolls filled with pork, ham and beef to be served later in the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the assembled attendees enjoyed convivial conversation in the bar and Edwardian Lounge - with some who they may not have seen for some time.

At 8pm promptly, the President paraded the boar's head into the main bar, ably assisted by David Trewin who helped him support the considerable weight of the large boar's head.

Vice President Alf Edwards, as custom dictates, preceded the main parade with a pot of mustard to honour the centuries-old tradition.

Words of the boar's head carol were provided to all.

Once the boar's head was placed on the main food serving table, the President returned to give a warm welcome to all attendees and told a very interesting story about how, in one cathedral, candles were successively lit as that festive procession advanced. He then related the well known tale about how the boar's head feast was established through an Oxford student ramming his book down the throat of an angry boar.

The President thanked Rosanne Norris profusely for her work in preparing the boar's head and presented her with a gift in appreciation.

Immediate Past President Clive Bowen-Davies (who also manages the 50-Club lottery) then organised the December draw and the balls were drawn by Gaye Hadley. The happy recipients this time were Alf Edwards £100; John Griffiths and Christina Edwards (£50 each).

Everyone then duly "tucked into" the feast of rolls and all the various trimmings, overseen by the boar's head sitting amid the serving table.
